  Lover’s Brooch

© 2016 Marie McCurry

This was written using size 20, Lizbeth thread and DMC embroidery floss (in parenthesis).  Feel free to add decorative picots and/or beads.  This brooch also would make a great pendant, bracelet or earrings.  Finished size:  1 ½”  in diameter (size 20 thread) and 2” in diameter (DMC floss).

Materials:
2 – Colors of size 20, Lizbeth thread or DMC embroidery floss (use all 6-strands)
1 – Strand of gold or silver, metallic sewing thread (Coats & Clark or Sulky)
1 – 1” pin bar
15 (10) – 12/0 seed beads
(5 – 3 mm round beads)
6 (5) – 4 mm round beads
(1 – 6 mm round bead)
2 – Shuttles
Matching sewing thread (optional, can use the ends to sew in the beads.)
Acid-free glue

All tatting will be done with one strand of metallic sewing thread and one strand of size 20 thread (DMC floss).
Step #1:
Wind 1 – shuttle with the first color thread and the metallic thread.  This step will be the shuttle only.

All “hearts” are:  4 – 8 – 7 + (join to the last picot)  8 – 4.  Join in the appropriate picots (see diagram).  Cut ends, can use the ends to add the beads or use matching sewing thread.

Step #2:
Wind another shuttle with the second color thread and the metallic thread.  This step will be the shuttle only.

All rings are:  4 + (join to the picot between the “hearts” )  4 (see diagram).  Cut ends, can use the ends to add the beads or use matching sewing thread.

Step #3:
Wind another shuttle with the second color thread and the metallic thread.  This step will use the ball and shuttle.

These two rounds consist of chains.
Round 1:
Start in one of the dimples of a “heart” (see diagram).
C1:  2 – 2 – 2 – 2 – 2 – 2 – 2 – 2    (7 picots totals), lock join in the next “heart’s” dimple.
C2 – 5:  Repeat C1, four more times.  Cut and hide ends or perform a split chain on the last 2 ds.
Round 2:
If a split chain was tatted, tat 4 ds, lj to the next picot, 3 ds, lock join to the next picot.  Continue around, following the diagram.
Attach thread to the first picot from C1.
Tat 3 ds, lock join (6 times).  Tat 4 ds, lock join.  Continue tatting this, around (see diagram).
