Lil'

Lil'

I had to make earrings to go with my new pendant...Lil' Cross Earrings.

...After tatting them, I discovered they can be worn the other way.

Alternative

Alternative

Another way of tatting around the turquoise embellishment.   Last week I posted this, using 4 mm beads.  The alternative, using all seed beads.

The foundation row is the same.
The next row:  During this round, I will pull an extremely small picot (just enough to get a size 15 or 16 crochet hook in).
1.)  Tat:  1 ds, slide up a seed bead (core thread) and 3 seed beads (working thread), 1.
2.)  Lock join between the last cwj and the 1ds (foundation round)...you will pull a picot here.
    3.)
Slide up a seed bead (core thread)and Lock join between the 1 ds (foundation round) and the cwj...you will pull another picot here.
    4.)  Repeat steps 10 - 12 around.

Final Row:

Tat 10 ds, lock join to the thread on top of the single bead (core thread bead).  When you get to the bail, tat the chain 7 -  3.

Beads and Terms:

Experienced tatters can add the beads as you tat the brooch.  Beginners may want to sew them in, after your done tatting the brooch.  Feel free to substitute beads.

Step #4:

Brooches tatted with DMC floss, the bead sizes are in parenthesis “(  )”.  The black lines show the direction to sew the beads in.

1.)   Attach thread between the 4th and 5th ds of the 8ds section of one of the hearts.  Thread 2 – seed beads SB (3 SB) and sew across on the adjacent heart, attaching in the same location (see diagram).  Use the BOP technique.  Sew this twice.
2.)  Add 5 – 4 mm (4 mm) beads from the bottom of the hearts “dimple” to the rings from step #2 (attach the thread half way down the ring and attach to the adjacent rings in the same location) (see diagram).  Use the BOP technique.  Sew this twice.
3.)  Add 5 – seed beads (3 mm) beads to the rings from step #2.  Use the BOP or BOT (whichever fits) and the TTA technique.  Sew this twice.
4.)  Add 1 – 4 mm (6mm) bead to one of the rings and attach to the opposite directions (see diagram).  Use the BOT and TTA technique.  Sew this twice.

Step #5:
Sew on the pin bar.  Use the holes and ends to attach the pin bar to the brooch.  Make sure you place the pin bar above the “horizontal axis” (see diagram).  Doing so, will prevent the brooch from “flopping” forward.

Add a drop of acid-free glue on the tatting, where the “flap” hits the tatting (see diagram).  This will prevent the tatting from wearing.  This brooch may need to be blocked and stiffened on the large chains and hearts.  The little chains may be blocked.  For a “frillier” effect, do not block the little chains.

  Lover’s Brooch

This was written using size 20, Lizbeth thread and DMC embroidery floss (in parenthesis).  Feel free to add decorative picots and/or beads.  This brooch also would make a great pendant, bracelet or earrings.  Finished size:  1 ½”  in diameter (size 20 thread) and 2” in diameter (DMC floss).

Materials:
2 – Colors of size 20, Lizbeth thread or DMC embroidery floss (use all 6-strands)
1 – Strand of gold or silver, metallic sewing thread (Coats & Clark or Sulky)
1 – 1” pin bar
15 (10) – 12/0 seed beads
(5 – 3 mm round beads)
6 (5) – 4 mm round beads
(1 – 6 mm round bead)
2 – Shuttles
Matching sewing thread (optional, can use the ends to sew in the beads.)
Acid-free glue

All tatting will be done with one strand of metallic sewing thread and one strand of size 20 thread (DMC floss).
Step #1:
Wind 1 – shuttle with the first color thread and the metallic thread.  This step will be the shuttle only.

All “hearts” are:  4 – 8 – 7 + (join to the last picot)  8 – 4.  Join in the appropriate picots (see diagram).  Cut ends, can use the ends to add the beads or use matching sewing thread.

Step #2:
Wind another shuttle with the second color thread and the metallic thread.  This step will be the shuttle only.

All rings are:  4 + (join to the picot between the “hearts” )  4 (see diagram).  Cut ends, can use the ends to add the beads or use matching sewing thread.

Step #3:
Wind another shuttle with the second color thread and the metallic thread.  This step will use the ball and shuttle.

These two rounds consist of chains.
Round 1:
Start in one of the dimples of a “heart” (see diagram).
C1:  2 – 2 – 2 – 2 – 2 – 2 – 2 – 2    (7 picots totals), lock join in the next “heart’s” dimple.
C2 – 5:  Repeat C1, four more times.  Cut and hide ends or perform a split chain on the last 2 ds.
Round 2:
If a split chain was tatted, tat 4 ds, lj to the next picot, 3 ds, lock join to the next picot.  Continue around, following the diagram.
Attach thread to the first picot from C1.
Tat 3 ds, lock join (6 times).  Tat 4 ds, lock join.  Continue tatting this, around (see diagram).
