Souvenir

Souvenir

I found a little 6 X 4," souvenir photo album in the thrift store for $0.29.  It had black paper and I thought it would make a cute sketch book.  I tried a colored pencil drawing of a cat.

Trip

 Trip

We went on a little fishing trip.  I brought along my souvenir, sketch book to work on during the evening.  I'm on the last page of the book, drawing a couple of fly amanitas.

Bubbles

Bubbles

The pictures seemed a little dark in areas.  I thought I should add white, as a base layer.  Seeing a study of bubbles, on YouTube, confirmed my theory.

Quick

I made a quick, sketch of a cat's face, in the mini photo album.  Now to add the color.

Happy Birthday, Cheryl.

Bird Nest Earrings

Bird Nest Earrings

This was a special order, a friend wanted a beautiful stick pin made into a pair of earrings.  The pin was a gift from her mom, a souvenir from Australia.  I carefully separated the sections with a jewelers saw and smoothed the edges down with a rubber polishing point on a Dremel.  The tatting was done with two strands of sewing thread.  These remind me of a birds nest.

Remember, for those who have ever needle tatted, the "Needle Tatting Forum"  is having a tatting exchange.  The last day for sign up is Friday, 31 January.

Learning

Learning

I found that, certain colors didn't work on this paper.  Some of the colors had surprised me, thinking they should work.  I was amazed, how well the greys "popped" out on the paper.  The metallics works wonders on this paper.  They don't work so well on white paper.  The picture is of a watercolor study I found on Instagram.

Marbles

Marbles

I've always been intrigued with glass.  The transparency and play of lights would mesmerize me.  I wanted to paint/draw glass and crystal, but found it intimidating.  I found a study on a glass marble and gave it a go.

Metallics

Metallics

Playing with the metallic colored pencils on black paper.  They are glamorous on black paper, instead of white paper.  It was hard to photograph, but looks better in person.

Yellow

Yellow

I decided to draw a yellow-eyed cat in my souvenir book.    I was drawing this on one of our fishing/camping trips.

Sphere

Sphere

Another thing I want to learn to draw, besides cat's eyes and glass, is metallic objects.  I found another, so-so, YouTube video on a gold sphere.  I'm using the black paper in the mini scrap book to practice on.  This paper is ok, but it can't take too many, multiple layering's.  As you can see, the paper started to tear away in a few spots....oh, well, looks like a tarnished, brass ball.  Just practice.

Arches

Arches

Drawing the arch, colored pencil drawing, gave me an idea.  Last spring we went to the Arches National Park in Utah.  I wanted to draw the architectural formations from the park.  This one is the balancing rock.  I used white, as  a base, in the vibrant areas.

Smashing Bracelet

Smashing Bracelet

I smashed a few extra lighthouse  pennies and made bracelet out of them.  Too bad there wasn't different lighthouse pennies in the area.  That would make a cool souvenir bracelet.  A hint, use pre-1982 pennies and seal them with colorless fingernail polish.  The newer pennies have a zinc core and tend to surface once smashed.

Windows

Windows

Last year, we visited Arches National Monument, in Moab Utah.  One of the arches we hiked around was the Windows area.  This consisted of three arches:  North Window, South Window and Turret Arch.  The South Window was around the corner, tucked away, so it couldn't be seen from the main road.

Here is a stary sky over North Window and Turret Arch in colored pencils.

Mini

Mini

I had found a Souvenir book at the thrift store, thinking it would make a great mini sketch book.  I have it half-way finished.  Here is a cats face, drawn with colored pencils.  Of, course, it looks better in person.
